OHIS stay safe with Clarke Cable highly visible solutions

Introduction:
Oxon Health Informatics Service (OHIS) provide the IT Hardware & Systems Network to Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. They are based at The John Radcliffe Hospital and cover this and all the Healthcare facilities within their trust.

The Challenge:
Clarke Cable needed to deliver a power distribution solution to fit mobile workstation trolleys that are to be deployed in operating theatres and hospital wards. The workstations would be loaded with either laptop or PC based computing capability to record patient history. Oxon Health Informatics Service needed bespoke cabling to be presented in a coiled fashion to allow the trolleys to be moved around whilst connected to the mains supply. Due to the environment, it was of the utmost importance that safety was the biggest feature. A coiled solution needed to be designed to retract and minimise trip hazards along with a high visibility
colour, as a second precaution, to alert persons to the power cable and workstation presence.

The Process:
In the design Clarke Cable produced two coiled cable assemblies which utilised a double insulated Y-Splitter; this meant that the cable could facilitate two interconnections allowing it to cater for both Laptop and PC loaded trolleys. The Laptop enabled trolley had an interconnection to feed the power supply and the second for a printer. The PC enabled trolley had one for the PC and one for the LCD monitor. A secondary bi-product was also then designed using a patented Clarke “Y Connector” to power operating trolleys that are fitted with not one but two LCD monitors. The whole delivered solution was then produced in a highly visible colour for health and safety purposes.

Safe:
High visibility colour combined with retractable coiled cable minimised any trip hazard to staff & patients.

Efficient:
Effective cable management allows trolleys to be easily moved away from the designated power source.

Versatile:
A retro-fit means the solution can be adapted to any brand of mobile IT workstation and offer interface to all IT hardware.

Conclusion:
Clarke Cable designed a fully bespoke solution that met with all the customers health and safety requirements. The solution delivered to Oxon Health Informatics Service (OHIS) with an adaptable power distribution for global versatility. The systems can now interface with all IT workstations both UK and International.
